Between Friday 14th and Sunday 16th August, Victoria Warehouse will host the 2015 PartyPoker World Pool Masters. This will be the 23rd annual pocket billiards showdown, offering a $20,000 prize to whoever wins pool’s most sought-after title.
The World Pool Masters was formerly titled the European Pool Masters, before competitors from other parts of the globe were invited. Historically, the tournament featured 16 world-class pool players, competing in single elimination format, but in 2010 the number of players increased to 32. The first round of the event was played in double-elimination, before going back to single elimination. However, 2011 saw the tournament return to the original 16 player single elimination format, with each match a race-to-8, winner breaks.
The prestigious sporting event never fails to bring together some of the biggest names in pocket billiards, and this year will feature the defending champion Shane Van Boening (USA), 2009 champion Darren Appleton (England) and Niels Feijen (Holland), the 2013 winner.
Returning to the competition will be 2014 runner-up Nikos Ekonomopoulos (Greece), John Morra (Canada) who previously played as a qualifier in 2010, and Waleed Majid (Qatar and the Middle East). Last year, Van Boening was closely matched by Australian James Georgiadis who will make another appearance, as will 2012 runner-up Mateusz Sniegocki (Poland). All-time Masters legend Ralf Souquet (Germany) will also be returning. Souquet is a confirmed favourite with UK audiences, and has been crowned Masters champion six times.
Current WPA World 10 Ball champion Ko Pin Yi (Taiwan), the current World No. 6 Liu Haitao (China), and World No. 1 Carlo Biado (Philippines) will also be competing. More players are still to be announced, including another British player and a top champion from South America.
The eight first round matches will take place on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening, and the four quarter-final games on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. All matches are race to eight, winner breaks, and the World Pool Masters will culminate on Sunday evening with two semi-finals and the championship match. Cloth will be supplied by Iwan Simonis, the Official Table is Diamond, and the Official Balls are from Super Aramith.
This is an absolutely unmissable event for fans of cue sports, and tickets are still available here.
